What Rough Beast | Poem for November 22, 2017

Naomi Thiers
Resistance

Exactly like netted fish
—Carolyn Forché

This net of bright desire—the
thousand things of this world—is
what binds us unless we swim
toward, in, the flecks of pale light
that shimmer, barely seen, beyond our bodies,

unless we pare ourselves close to bone
and slip, unencumbered, through the error
in the pattern—perhaps just at the second
we’re hauled to the surface,

to air—or to life.
