What Rough Beast | Poem for October 7, 2017

Zachary Taylor Knox
(short of breath)

all kinds of quakers flaked through the
great depression, road west on dust bunnies
into the clouds of infamy and money
so long the american dream they sold
it last week but they did donate the soup
strainer for the kitchen and waved
the hefty lease on the homeless shelter

until more people got back on their feet
bless their immortal souls, Jesus watches
don’t ya know, He even smiled as they
preached denial to allegations that they
laced their politicians pockets from
offshore assets

Zachary Taylor Knox’s poems have appeared in Ealain and Penny Ante Feud. He lives in Fort Madison, Iowa.
